Security forces arrest associate of Lashkar-e-Taiba in J-K’s Baramulla

A major breakthrough for the security forces in their anti-terrorist operation in Jammu and Kashmir was the arrest of an associate of the Pakistani terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba in Baramulla district.

Acting on a specific tip-off, Baramulla Police and Rashtriya Rifles personnel jointly launched a search operation in Nagbal Chandoosa area and nabbed the terrorist associate. Security forces also recovered one grenade from the possession of an arrested terrorist associate.

The associate, identified as Mohammad Ashraf Mir, provided financial and logistical support to the Lashkar terrorists. "A case against Mir has been filed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act," the Baramulla police said in a statement, adding that a thorough investigation had been launched.

This comes nearly three weeks after security forces killed two terrorists in a fierce gunfight that took place in Wanigam Payeen Kreeri area of Baramulla district. The slain terrorists belonged to the terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

Last month, security agencies foiled a 26/11-style terror attack planned during the G20 conference in Jammu and Kashmir's Gulmarg. A ground laborer (OGW) was arrested from a luxury hotel in Gulmarg. During an interrogation in April, the OGW reportedly revealed that the terrorists planned to hold hostage people, including dignitaries, who were scheduled to attend the G20 meeting between May 22 and May 24.

Following the revelations, the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has beefed up security in the valley. In addition to the deployment of National Security Guard (NSG) and MARCOS troops, the Center made last-minute changes to the G20 meeting itinerary.

Reports further claimed that both Pakistan and China were involved as they wanted to disrupt the G20 meetings in Jammu and Kashmir to prevent foreign investment from flowing into India.
